There's something so quietly nostalgic and refreshingly simple about "Stella", the fragrance by its namesake Stella McCartney, that it's easy to dismiss it for something other than the rare loveliness it is. "Stella" opens on the skin in a watery burst of velvety petals, like a morning dew---except, this dew is quickly evaporating off aging roses, during the hottest day of summer. A papered dryness follows, giving way to bug-buzzing midday steam, as rising off deep-summer greenery. The petals eventually fall on the skin like oils of the day, drying under a dusty sunset. Amazingly, this is a distinctly primal, yet clean-scrubbed fragrance; its sexiness is of the laid-back, sultry variety and is lazily philosophical in nature. "Stella" is to truly smell like a rose...like the ones basting on hot days in grandma's garden, but then, it's so much edgier than that even and the ambery drydown reminds one of visiting grandma's garden as a teenager; you've got cool essential oil on, to be "of the moment"...but the cozy charm of those roses still tickles the heart.
I'm a confessed fragrance addict and niche collector/tester; if a fragrance were moving and personal enough, I'd move mountains to own it. Here, I find a fragrance in the highest concentration available, parfum--a frag that reveals itself to be even more unique as the testing pilgrimage goes on---and it's one of the most affordable fragrances on market. Virtually anyone can own a swig of "Stella", whether it be roll-on accessible or dipped from a vat of the most concentrated form. Affordability and accessibility should really be thought of as a badge of confidence from the creator, not a dismissal of luxury, as some shadier brands would claim. If a fragrance is good enough, its quality high enough, it shouldn't take a smoke-and-mirrors show to keep people loyal to it. Throw in a company strongly devoted to environmental ethics and animal rights and we might have found the most guilt-free buy of its kind.
